NCERT Solutions For Class 10 English First Flight Poetry Chapter 5 The Ball Poem

A young boy once played with his ball. It was jumping up and down in the roadway. The young player was ecstatically having fun. It was bouncing until it abruptly dropped into the ocean and vanished. The youngster started to cry a lot when the ball was gone. There were other balls, the poet added. Because it was not a significant loss, he could buy another. There was no cause for concern. But because the youngster owned that ball for a very long time and had grown really attached to it, he was very upset. It had something to do with his past. The poet believes that buying another ball is pointless. He must acknowledge his share of the loss’ blame.

Thinking about the Poem (Page 47)

Question 1: Why does the poet say, “I would not intrude on him”? Why doesn’t he offer him money to buy another ball?

Answer: The poet wants the youngster to grow from the pain of bereavement, which is why he says, “I would not impose on him.” The boy will learn from this that suffering loss is a significant aspect of life. As a result, the poet refrains from influencing the boy’s natural learning process. Additionally, he declines to give the boy money to buy another ball because doing so would negate the loss lesson learned from the experience and prevent the youngster from drawing responsibility lessons from it.

Question 2: “… staring down/All his young days into the harbour where/His ball went …” Do you think the boy has had the ball for a long time? Is it linked to the memories of days when he played with it?

Answer: Yes, it appears that the boy has been in possession of the ball for a while. All of his childhood memories of great days raced before his eyes as it bounced and dropped into the sea. He came to the realisation that those moments, like the ball, would never return. He believed that while he could purchase new balls, those that were lost when the ball was thrown into the water would never be found again.

Question 3: What does “in the world of possessions” mean?

Answer: “In the world of possessions” alludes to a world filled with material objects. Different people own various things, including real estate, money, and other valuable possessions. The poet suggests that even though losing the ball could seem like a relatively little inconvenience, it would cause the boy to realise his sense of loss and the experience of losing memories connected to it.

Question 4: Do you think the boy lost anything earlier? Pick out the words that suggest the answer.

Answer: No, it would appear that the youngster had not previously lost anything. The phrase “He senses first duty in a world of possessions” makes it clear. This line implies that the experience of loss let him realise how many priceless moments are lost when a particular object is lost.

Question 5: What does the poet say the boy is learning from the loss of the ball? Try to explain this in your own words.

Answer: Through his poem, the poet seeks to show how the boy has learned a valuable lesson about coping with the loss of his ball. As he matures in this materialistic society, he is going through pain and sadness. He discovers that a number of significant things in life can be lost and never be recovered. As soon as he drops the ball, he also feels his first wave of responsibility. As he advances in his life and comes to realise the true nature and meaning of grief, the youngster learns to stand up and move on from the loss.

Question 6: Have you ever lost something you liked very much? Write a paragraph describing how you felt then, and saying whether — and how — you got over your loss.

Answer: Yes, I had lost my pet dog, who was only five years old, in a car accident. I remember playing ball in my lawn one day with my pet. My dog jumped to catch the ball I threw into the air while playing with him, but it rebounded back and rolled to a nearby street. My puppy was run over by a speeding car as it rushed to retrieve the ball, and I could hear it screaming in agony. When I arrived at the scene, my dog was covered in blood. I hurried him to the hospital right away, but it was too late; he was already bleeding heavily and died from his wounds. I was very upset and grief-stricken by this incident. In due course of time, I recovered from my loss, but that incident is fresh in my memories and I still love my dog and miss him dearly.
