Normalising scores is an important aspect of the CUET UG exam and often a topic of fascination and ambiguity. The CUET examination is held for entrance into Undergraduate programs (UG) across all Central, State, Private, or Deemed Universities. The examination took place in 387 locations throughout India and 24 locations outside India. As per NTA, “In this approach, the percentile for every candidate is determined by comparing their raw marks to the raw marks of other candidates within the same session.” This occurs for each session over several days for the same topic. These percentiles are subsequently standardized and transformed into normalized scores. For sessions with fewer candidates, they are combined with larger sessions.
During the normalisation procedure, the raw scores of students taking the same subject on various days and shifts are transformed into normalised scores. The UGC Chairman, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, discussing the Normalisation process in a conversation with a leading news agency stated, “The normalised scores of candidates, calculated through the equipercentile method across various sessions in a specific subject, can be utilized similarly to how we handle the raw scores from a traditional single session exam.” As a result, at a specific university, if the raw scores of the skill component carry a particular weight, it can be combined with the rest of the weight of the normalized scores to create the rank list.

In the CUET entrance exam, normalization is a statistical method employed to fairly compare candidate scores across various exam sessions. The CUET, conducted across multiple days and sessions featuring various question sets, necessitates this process to ensure fairness for all exam participants. The NTA’s method for CUET normalization in 2025 features a comprehensive strategy to guarantee equality. This process starts by converting raw scores (the marks achieved by candidates) into percentile scores. In cases of sessions with a lower number of candidates, these scores are combined with those from larger sessions to ensure consistency.

How to Calculate CUET Normalised Score
As stated earlier, the equipercentile method is applied for all candidates who took the same subject in different sessions to facilitate comparisons between those sessions. These are the various stages involved in computing normalised marks.
Step 1: Calculate the percentiles of students in every shift using the raw scores from various shifts.
To determine the percentile, the percentile for each group of students is first computed based on the raw marks they achieved in each shift.
Step 2: Percentiles are arranged in descending order.
In the second step, the percentiles are organized in descending order by recording the students’ raw scores in each shift.
Step 3: Linear estimation
The linear interpolation technique is then used to compute students’ marks in the empty spaces of the table above.
Step 4: Calculation of standardized scores
In the last stage, standardized scores for every student are computed on a uniform scale.
