Bhai Dooj Story: Why do we celebrate?
Before knowing the shubh muhurat for Bhai Dooj, we must understand the significance of this beautiful festival. It occurs two days after Diwali and has great emotional and cultural significance in India. The two terms that make up the festival are “Bhai,” which means brother, and “Dooj,” which is the day that it is celebrated, which is the second day after the new moon. It is one of the most auspicious holidays honouring the bond and love between brothers and sisters. Love and mutual respect are the bonds that bind all brothers and sisters together on this festival. Applying a roli and haldi tilak to her brother’s forehead on this holy day is a ritual that the sister does. Brothers also offer something to their sisters as a sign of love and care, and this represents the sister’s prayers for her brother’s health and long life.
Bhai Dooj Significance
Bhai Dooj celebrates the pristine bond between brothers and sisters. There is also a mythological context and significance of Bhai Dooj. Legend has it that once upon a time, Yamaraj, the god of death, visited his sister Yami. Yami covered her brother’s forehead with a tilak as a sign of greeting. She also prepared some special treats for him. Inspired by the kindness and affection, Yamraj asked his sister for a favour. She prayed for his return each year and told any sister who conducted the rituals and put on a tilak not to fear the god of death. There is another legend that states that after Lord Krishna vanquished the demon Narakasura, he visited his sister Subhadra, who garlanded him with a Tilaka on his brow. The day has been referred to as Bhai Dooj ever since.
