The NEET exam was supposed to begin in 2012 but was postponed for a year. On May 5, 2013, it was held for the first time, marking a watershed moment in medical education. Over ten lakh students applied for this breakthrough medical exam. However, on July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court canceled NEET, agreeing with 115 petitioners and ruling that the Medical Council of India (MCI) could not meddle in college admissions.

Many states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, have challenged NEET, noting significant differences in the syllabus. As a result, in 2012, the Supreme Court deemed NEET unlawful. Nonetheless, it was restored on April 11, 2016, and has since become an integral part of Indian medical education. In 2020, other exams like AIIMS and JIPMER were also merged with the NEET exam, making it the sole exam for admission into medical courses at the undergraduate level.
