Surat Split 1907
Introduction
1906 – Lord Minto was appointed as the new Secretary of State to India.
Hence the tension between the militants and the moderates became more pronounced
.
1906 Calcutta session
Moderates candidate – Dadabhai Naoroji
Millitants candidate – Tilak or Lala Lajpat Rai
President – Dadabhai Naoroji
Moderates led by Pherozeshah Mehta, were defeated in this election.
Congress split was avoided by accepting moderate demands.
Millitants resolutions passed in 1906 Calcutta session
Swadeshi,
Boycott,
National Education, and
Self-Government.
1907 Surat session
Initially 1907 session was originally planned to be held in Poona.
But Poona become a stronghold centre of the militants. Fearing a repeat of the Calcutta
session, the moderates shifted the venue to Surat.
Moderates candidate – Rash Behari Ghosh
Millitants candidate – Lala Lajpat Rai
Lala Lajpat Rai, however, turned down the offer to avoid the split.
Rash Behari Ghosh become the president of 1907 Surat session
The Pherozeshah Mehta group removed 1906, militants resolution from the agenda.
In order to counter Mehta’s manoeuvering, the militants decided to oppose the election
of Rash Behari Gosh as president. Hence the session ended in chaos.
The Indian National Congress, born in December 1885, was now split into two groups –
militant and moderate.
The Congress which emerged after the Surat split was more loyal to the British than they
were before.
1908 Madras session
The new Congress, minus the militants, came to be known as Mehta Congress.
This congress session was only attended by moderates.
On the other hand militants could not crystallize into a new political organization.
