NID National Institute of Design

The National Institute of Design (NID), also known as NID, is an autonomous and statutory body for design education in India. As an Indian institute, NID follows the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines to help students get admission into the institute. The Institute has been established under the ‘Design Council of India Act, 1988 and is promoted by the Ministry of Design, Government of India. The National Institutes of Design (NIDs) are a network of independent public design institutes in India, with the main campus located in Ahmedabad and extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. The principal institute was established in 1961. The locations of the additional NIDs are in Kurukshetra, Vijayawada, Jorhat, and Bhopal. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, oversees the NIDs autonomously. The government’s Ministry of Science and Technology’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has recognized the NIDs as a scientific and industrial research organization. The National Institute of Design Act of 2014 designates the universities as Institutes of National Importance.

National Institute of Design (NID) Entrance Exam Course Eligibility 

In order to apply for the courses offered by the various National Design Institutes, the students have to fulfil some eligibility requirements. In this section, we will discuss the various eligibility requirements one needs to satisfy in order to get admission into NID. 

Bachelor of Design(B.Des)

Candidates must fulfil the age criteria and educational qualification criteria to be able to seek admission into B.Des courses offered by NID.

Age Criteria

  1. For Indian Nationals belonging to the General or EWS Category, the Candidates who are born on or after 1st July 2002 will be considered eligible for admission into these courses. 
  2. For Indian Nationals who belong to SC/ST/OBC Category, the Candidates who are born on or after 1st July 1999 will be eligible for admission into these courses.
  3. For Indian Nationals who belong to the PwD Category, the Candidates who are born after 1st July 1997 will be deemed eligible for admission into these courses.
  4. For Foreign Nationals, the Candidates who are born on or after 1st July 2002 will be considered eligible for admission into these courses.

Educational Criteria: The interested candidates should have cleared their Class 12 or 10+2 Examination from any stream from a recognized board such as CBSE, ICSE or equivalent

Master of Design(M.Des)

Candidates who meet both the educational as well as age criteria will be considered eligible for admission into M.Des course offered by NID.

Age Criteria

  1. For Indian Nationals belonging to the General or EWS Category, only those candidates who are born on or after 1st July 1992 will be considered eligible for admission into these courses. 
  2. For Indian Nationals belonging to SC/ST/OBC Category, only those candidates who are born on or after 1st July 1989 will be considered eligible for these courses. 
  3. For Indian Nationals belonging to PwD Category, only those who are born on or after 1st July 1987 will be considered eligible for these courses.
  4. For Foreign Nationals, those candidates who are born on or after 1st July 1992 will be considered eligible for admission into these courses.

Educational Criteria

The Candidate should possess at least one of these educational qualifications :

  1. Candidates should have completed at least four years of Bachelor’s Degree after Class 12 or 10+2.
  2. Candidates should have undergone a full-time diploma of not less than four years in Design or Fine Arts or Architecture after Class 12 or 10+2. 
  3. Candidate should have done a Bachelor’s Degree in any specialization after Class 12 or 10+2.
  4. Also, Candidates who are in the final year of their Diploma or bachelor’s are eligible to apply provided they clear all the exams without any backlog.
  5. In case a candidate has pursued any degree. Diploma from any foreign institution or college same shall be submitted to the Admissions Office by the Candidate from the Association of Indian Universities at the time of document verification (May/June 2022)

National Institute of Design (NID): Course Admissions 

Every year, the NID Admissions Cell conducts the NID Design Aptitude Test (NID-DAT), a two-stage national entrance exam for NIDs that is used to determine eligibility for admission to undergraduate and graduate programmes at institutions. The exam is divided into two stages: NID-DAT Prelims, a pen-and-paper design and general aptitude test, and NID-DAT Mains, often an in-studio design test with the possibility of a personal interview and a portfolio evaluation.
