    Which of the following is valid for (a + b)² = a² + b²
    Question

    Which of the following is valid for (a + b)² = a² + b²

    A.

    May be true for only a finite number of (a, b)

    B.

    May be true for infinite number of (a, b)

    C.

    May be true for exactly one pair (a, b)

    D.

    Cannot be true for any set of (a, b)

    Correct option is B

    Given:
    (a + b)2 = a2 + b2
    Formula used:
    (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab
    Solution:
    (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab
    Given that, (a + b)2 = a2 + b2
    Substitute (a + b)2 = a2 + b2, in (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab we get,
    => a2 + b2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab
    => 2ab = 0
    => a = 0 or b = 0
    ∴ (0, b) or (a, 0)
    Here the value of a and b can be infinite. Thus it may be true for an infinite number of (a, b).
    Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
