    Question

When 10% of the inhabitants of a village died of cholera, a panic set in, during which 25% of the remaining inhabitants left the village. The population then reduced to 4050. Find the number of original inhabitants.

    A.

    7000

    B.

    5000

    C.

    8000

    D.

    6000

    Correct option is D

    Given:

10% died, leaving 90% of the population.

25% of the remaining left, so 75% remained.

    Reduced population = 4050.

    Formula Used:

    Original Population=Reduced Population(1Death Rate)×(1Left Percentage).\text{Original Population} = \frac{\text{Reduced Population}}{(1 - \text{Death Rate}) \times (1 - \text{Left Percentage})}.

    Solution:

    After 10% died  remaining 90% = 0.9

    25% leave then remaining 75% = 0.75

    Now,

    Original Population=40500.9×0.75=40500.675=6000.\text{Original Population} = \frac{4050}{0.9 \times 0.75} = \frac{4050}{0.675} = 6000.
