Question

In an examination 95% of the candidates passed and 150 failed. The number of candidates who appeared in the examination is.

A.

2500

B.

3000

C.

3200

D.

3500

Correct option is B

Given:

95% of the candidates passed

Number of candidates failed = 150

Formula Used:

Total candidates = Failed candidates×100Failed %\frac{\text{Failed candidates} \times 100}{\text{Failed \%}}

Solution:

Failed % = 100% - 95% = 5%

5% candidates = 150

Therefore, 100% candidates:

150×1005 \frac{150 \times 100}{5} = 3000

Number of candidates who appeared in the examination = 3000

Alternate Solution (Exam Trick):

If 5% = 150

Then 1% = 30

So, 100% = 30 × 100 = 3000
