The sum of the roots of x2−px+q=0 x^2 - px + q = 0x2−px+q=0 is ___________.
Question

The sum of the roots of x2px+q=0 x^2 - px + q = 0 is ___________.

A.

-p

B.

pq\frac{p}{q}

C.

p

D.

q

Correct option is C

Given:

Given equation = x2px+q=0x^2 - px + q = 0

Formula Used:

If the roots of equationax2+bx+c=0 ax^2 +bx +c =0  areα and β \alpha\ and\ \beta

Then sum of roots =α+β=ba \alpha + \beta= - \frac{b}{a}

Solution:

Given equation = x2px+q=0x^2 - px + q = 0

Here a = 1 , b =-p and c = q

Sum of roots =ba=p1=p - \frac{b}{a} = - \frac{-p}{1} = p
