Question

the sum of a number and its reciprocal is 21302 \frac{1}{30}. Then , the number is:

A.

23 or 32\frac{2}{3} \space or \space \frac{3}{2}

B.

43 or 34\frac{4}{3} \space or \space \frac{3}{4}

C.

56 or 65\frac{5}{6} \space or \space \frac{6}{5}

D.

76 or 67\frac{7}{6} \space or \space \frac{6}{7}

Correct option is C

Given:

x+1x=2130=6130x + \frac{1}{x} = 2\frac{1}{30} = \frac{61}{30}

Solution:

x+1x=6130 x2+1=6130x x26130x+1=0x + \frac{1}{x} = \frac{61}{30} \\ \ \\ x^2 + 1 = \frac{61}{30}x \\ \ \\ x^2 - \frac{61}{30}x + 1 = 0

Using quadratic formula:

x=6130±(6130)24(1)(1)2 x=6130±(37219003600900)2x = \frac{\frac{61}{30} \pm \sqrt{\left(\frac{61}{30}\right)^2 - 4(1)(1)}}{2} \\ \ \\ x = \frac{\frac{61}{30} \pm \sqrt{\left(\frac{3721}{900}-\frac{3600}{900}\right)}}{2}

x=6130±1219002=6130±11302x = \frac{\frac{61}{30} \pm \sqrt{\frac{121}{900}}}{2} = \frac{\frac{61}{30} \pm \frac{11}{30}}{2}

So:

x=61+1130÷2=7230÷2=7260=65x = \frac{61 + 11}{30} \div 2 = \frac{72}{30} \div 2 = \frac{72}{60} = \frac{6}{5}

x=611130÷2=5030÷2=5060=56x = \frac{61 - 11}{30} \div 2 = \frac{50}{30} \div 2 = \frac{50}{60} = \frac{5}{6}
