Question

Study the given line graph and answer the question that follows.

The line graph shows the percentage of candidates qualified in different years from 1994 to 2000.

In which of the periods given in the options, is the absolute difference between the percentages of candidates qualified the maximum?

A.

1996 and 1999

B.

1995 and 1997

C.

1995 and 1996

D.

1994 and 1995

Correct option is D

Given:

1994 = 35, 1995 = 60, 1996 = 50,1997 = 70, 1998 = 40, 1999 = 50, 2000 = 80

Solution:

1994 to 1995: Difference% = 35, 60= 2535\frac{25}{35} ×\times100% = 500%7\frac{500\%}{7} = 71.4%

1995 to 1996: Difference % = 60, 50=1060\frac{10}{60}×\times 100% = 100%6\frac{100\%}6= 16.66%

1996 to 1997: Difference% = 50, 70= 2050\frac{20}{50}×\times100% = 40%

1997 to 1998: Difference% = 70, 40= 3070\frac{30}{70}×\times100% = 300%7\frac{300\%}7= 42.85%

1998 to 1999: Difference% = 40, 50= 1040\frac{10}{40} ×\times100% = 25%

1999 to 2000: Difference% = 50, 80= 3050\frac{30}{50} ×\times100% = 60%

The maximum absolute difference % is 71.4%, which occurs in the periods 1994 to 1995
