    Question

    If a an b are the roots of the equation x2 - 5x - 6 = 0 , then the value of (a - b)2 is

    A.

    24

    B.

    49

    C.

    18

    D.

    25

    Correct option is B

    Given:

    x2-5x-6

    Solution:

    x2-5x-6

    = x2- 6x + 1x -6

    = x(x-6) +1(x-6)

    = (x-6)(x+1)

    So, x = 6 , -1

    Now,

    a = 6, b = -1

    Hence,

    (a-b)2 = (6 - ( -1 ))2= (6 + 1)2= (7)2= 49
