Question

If a an b are the roots of the equation x2-5x - 6 = 0 , then the value of (a - b)2 is

A.

24

B.

49

C.

18

D.

25

Correct option is B

Given:

 x2-5x - 6

Solution:

x2 - 5x - 6

= x2- 6x + 1x - 6

=  x(x - 6) + 1(x - 6)

= (x-6) (x+1)

Roots of the equation x = 6, -1

a = 6, b  = -1

So,

(a - b)2 = (6 - ( -1))2 = (6 + 1)2 = (7)2 =  49
