    Question

    1000 boys and 600 girls are examined in a test. If 40% of the boys and 35% of the girls passed, then find the percentage (approximately) of the total number of candidates who failed in the test.

    A.

    31.75%

    B.

    70.25%

    C.

    61.88%

    D.

    50.89%

    Correct option is C

    GIVEN:
    Number of Boys = 1000
    Number of Girls = 600
    Percentage of boys who passed the exam = 40%
    Percentage of Girls who passed the exam = 35%
    FORMULA USED:
    Percentage = valueTotal value\frac{value }{Total \ value} × 100
    SOLUTION:
    According to the given conditions;
    Number of boys who passed the exam = 40% of 1000
    => 40100\frac{40} { 100} × 1000
    => 400
    Percentage of Girls who passed the exam = 35% of 600
    =>35100 \frac{35} { 100} × 600
    => 210
    Total number of students passed the exam = 400 + 210 = 610
    So the total number of students = 1600
    Then the total number of students who failed the exam = Total number of students - Total number of students passed the exam
    => 1600 - 610
    => 990
    So, the percentage of the total number of candidates who failed the test = 9901600\frac{990} { 1600}× 100
    => 61.88%
