APPSC Forest Section Officer Exam Pattern 2026

According to the notification, the written examination is of degree standard, except for the Mathematics paper, which is at SSC standard, and the qualifying English and Telugu test, which is also at SSC standard.

APPSC has prescribed negative marking for the examination. One-third of the marks prescribed for a question will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Walking Test and Medical Examination: Candidates should also note that the recruitment process includes a walking test and medical examination. These tests will be conducted by the Forest Department, with concurrence of APPSC. The Commission will pick eligible candidates in the ratio of 1:2 with reference to the total number of vacancies, as mentioned in the notification.

The detail syllabus for the Forest Section Officer are as follows:

Paper I: General Studies & Mental Ability

Paper I carries 150 marks and consists of General Studies and Mental Ability topics. The syllabus includes current affairs, science, history, geography, polity, economy, environment, disaster management, reasoning and data analysis.

1. Current Affairs: Major current events and issues at the international level, National current events, Current events and issues pertaining to Andhra Pradesh
2. General Science and Technology: General Science, Applications of science in day-to-day life, Contemporary developments in Science and Technology, Information Technology.
3. Indian History: Social aspects, Economic aspects, Cultural aspects, Political aspects, Andhra Pradesh, Indian National Movement.
4. Geography: Geography of India, Geography of Andhra Pradesh.
5. Indian Polity and Governance: Constitutional issues, Public policy, Reforms, e-Governance initiatives.
6. Indian Economy and Planning: Indian Economy, Planning.
7. Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection: Sustainable development, Environmental protection.
8. Disaster Management: Vulnerability profile, Prevention strategies, Mitigation strategies, Application of Remote Sensing in disaster assessment, Application of GIS in disaster assessment.

Paper II: Mathematics

Paper II consists of Mathematics at SSC standard and carries 150 marks. The syllabus covers Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration and Statistics.

1. Arithmetic: Number System, Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and real numbers, Fundamental operations
   Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, Square roots, Decimal fractions, Unitary method, Time and distance, Time and work, Percentages, Simple interest, Compound interest, Profit and loss, Ratio and proportion, Variation, Elementary Number Theory, Division algorithm, Prime and composite numbers, Divisibility tests for 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11, Multiples and factors, Factorisation theorem, HCF and LCM, Euclidean algorithm, Logarithms to base 10, Laws of logarithms, Use of logarithmic tables.
2. Algebra: Basic operations, Simple factors, Remainder theorem, HCF and LCM, Theory of polynomials, Solutions of quadratic equations, Relationship between roots and coefficients, Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns, Analytical and graphical solutions, Simultaneous linear inequalities in two variables, Practical problems involving equations and inequalities, Set language and notation, Rational expressions, Conditional identities, Laws of indices
3. Trigonometry: Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Values of sin x, cos x and tan x for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°, Simple trigonometric identities, Use of trigonometric tables, Heights and distances.
4. Geometry: Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Angles at a point, Parallel lines. Sides and angles of a triangle Congruency of triangles, Similar triangles, Concurrence of medians and altitudes, Properties of parallelograms Properties of rectangles, Properties of squares, Circles, Tangents and normals, Loci.
5. Mensuration: Areas of squares, Areas of rectangles, Areas of parallelograms, Areas of triangles, Areas of circles Areas of composite figures, Surface area and volume of cuboids, Lateral surface and volume of cones, Lateral, surface and volume of cylinders, Surface area and volume of spheres.
6. Statistics: Collection of statistical data, Tabulation, Frequency polygons, Histograms, Bar charts, Pie charts, Measures of central tendency.

Paper III: General Forestry

General Forestry is the largest specialised component of the APPSC Forest Section Officer examination.

1. Plant Science: The syllabus covers plant science basics, cell structure, plant kingdom classification, physiology, nutrition, nutrient absorption and metabolism, nutrient deficiency diagnosis, photosynthesis, respiration, growth and development, auxins and hormones, DNA and RNA, reproduction, pollination, fertilisation, sexual incompatibility, plant propagation, germination, seed treatments, seed development, seed structure and dormancy, forestry seed production and collection, plant diseases and their control, transgenic plants, ecological adaptation, vegetation zones and forests of Andhra Pradesh, deforestation, afforestation, wasteland reclamation, and plant varieties and their requirements.

2. Forests and Ecology: This section covers biodiversity, its genetic, species and ecosystem levels, ecosystem structure and functions, producers, consumers and decomposers, ecological succession, food chains and webs, ecological pyramids, and India’s biogeographical classification. It also includes biodiversity values and hotspots, habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, endangered and endemic species, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, the Convention on Biological Diversity, forest threats and protection, afforestation, forest regeneration, and carbon sequestration.

3. Horticulture: section covers the definition, branches and economic importance of horticulture, including production, employment, environmental protection, human resource development and nutritional value. It also includes horticultural divisions, propagation through cuttings, layerage, grafting, budding, rootstock and scion selection, factors affecting regeneration, and greenhouse crop production.

4. Soil Science: This section covers earth, rocks and minerals, geological structures, clinometer compass use, soil types and classification, forest soils, soil formation, and soil properties. It also includes soil erosion, its causes and agents, soil conservation, management of eroded areas, windbreaks, shelter belts, sand dunes, reclamation of saline and alkaline soils, waterlogged and wastelands, the role of forests in soil conservation, and manures and fertilizers.

5. Water Resources and Watershed Management: This section covers water resource management, surface and groundwater resources, water demand, impurities and quality analysis, water-borne diseases, drinking water standards, pumping and gravity schemes, watershed concepts and management, forest hydrology, the role of trees and mini-forests, environmental functions of forests, water harvesting, and soil conservation.

6. General Silviculture, Agro-Forestry and Social Forestry:

General Silviculture

General Silviculture covers the definition and principles of silviculture, ecological and physiological factors affecting vegetation, and natural and artificial regeneration. It also includes the economic importance and characteristics of major Indian forestry species such as Acacia, Albizzia, Bamboo, Neem, Casuarina, Dalbergia, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, Teak and Terminalia.

Agro-Forestry

Agro-Forestry covers its definition, scope and importance in people’s lives and domestic animal management. It includes integrated land-use planning, soil and water conservation, agro-forestry systems, species selection, multipurpose trees, NTFPs, and food, fodder and fuel security.

Social Forestry and Community Participation

This section covers the objectives, scope and need for social forestry, including urban forestry in Andhra Pradesh. It also includes AP community forest management, its aims, principles, methodology and the benefits of community participation.

7. Animal Health and Nutrition: This section covers the role of nutrition in animal health and production, feed and fodder conservation, use of agricultural by-products, feed supplements and additives, and management of nutritional deficiencies. It also includes major bacterial, viral, rickettsial and parasitic diseases of cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats, along with their causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and control. Animal-feed management in zoological parks is also covered.

8. Economic Zoology:  This section covers beneficial and harmful insects, insect vectors of human diseases, industrial fish, and Indian prawns and molluscs. It also includes poisonous and non-poisonous snakes, venomous animals such as centipedes, wasps and honey bees, genetic disorders caused by abnormal chromosomes or genes, genetic counselling, and the use of DNA in forensic investigations.

9. Forest Economics, Legislation and Administration:

Forest Economics: Forest Economics covers the basic principles of forest economics, cost-benefit analysis, demand and supply estimation, the role of the private sector, cooperatives, and corporate financing.

Forest Legislation: Forest Legislation includes the objectives and key provisions of the A.P. Forest Act, 1967, Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Forest Conservation Act, 1980, and Forest Rights Act, 2006.

Forest Administration: Forest Administration covers the structure and activities of the Andhra Pradesh State Forest Department. It also includes the origin and objectives of the Indian Forest Services, AP State Forest Services, and AP State Forest Subordinate Services.

10. Forest Mensuration, Remote Sensing and Forest Working Plan

Forest Mensuration: Forest Mensuration covers the measurement of tree diameter, girth, height and volume, along with form factor, stand-volume estimation, CAI, MAI, yield tables and stand tables. It also includes basic forest engineering and surveying.

Remote Sensing and Communication: This section covers remote sensing, satellite communication, forest-cover monitoring and GIS applications in forest management and modelling. It also includes wireless sets and the use of walkie-talkies for communication.

Forest Planning: Forest Planning includes planning and monitoring tools, integrated planning, multipurpose use of forest resources, and forest-industry development. It also covers Forest Management Plans and the difference between Working Plans and Management Plans.

Sampling and Estimation: This section covers complete enumeration and sampling, the need and basic concepts of sampling, large-scale surveys, sampling and non-sampling errors, and methods such as simple random, systematic and cluster sampling. It also includes ratio and regression estimation under simple and stratified random sampling.

11. Environmental Science and Natural Resources

Environmental Science

Environmental Science covers its definition, scope, importance and public awareness, along with air, water, soil, marine, noise and thermal pollution. It also includes nuclear hazards, solid-waste management, urban and industrial waste, environmental ethics, climate change, global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion, nuclear accidents, wasteland reclamation, and waste generated through consumerism.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources

This section covers renewable and non-renewable natural resources and the major issues related to forests, water, soil, land, minerals and energy resources.

APPSC Forest Section Officer Computer Proficiency Test Syllabus 2026

The notification also contains a separate Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) scheme and syllabus. The CPT is a practical-type examination of 60 minutes carrying 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks are 30 for SC/ST candidates, 35 for BC candidates and 40 for OC candidates.  The CPT syllabus includes:
