UPSC ESE Exam Pattern 2023: Detailed Exam Pattern

The detailed exam pattern of the Union Public Service Commission ESE for the various posts includes a computer-based objective test (CBT Exam) which is further divided into three Stages.

  • Stage-I: Engineering Services (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination
  1. The exam will consist of two objective types (multiple choice) question papers.
  2. They carry a maximum of 500 marks (Paper I – 200 Marks & Paper II – 300 Marks).
  3. The Total time duration of this Exam is 5 hours.
  4. There is also a negative marking i.e. for every wrong answer deducts 1/3 marks as a penalty.

Note:- Only those candidates who are qualified in the Preliminary/Stage-I Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Main/Stage-II Examination.

  • Stage-II: Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination
  1. The Exam has consist of two Papers in Engineering disciplines.
  2. The Total time duration of this Exam is 3 hours.
  3. They carry a total maximum mark of 600 (300 Marks on each paper).
  • Stage-III: Personality Test.
  1. The Exam carries a total of 200 Marks.
  2. This Exam mainly focuses on the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application, and integrity of character.
