Republic Day – Lahore Session

When India gained independence on August 15, 1947, it lacked a constitution and was entirely reliant on the British Government of India Act of 1935. King George VI ruled India until the promulgation of the Constitution in 1950. However, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru sowed the seeds of the Indian republican country in the Lahore Session of the INC (Indian National Congress). The seeds of the republic country were sown at the Indian National Congress’s Lahore convention on December 31, 1929, at midnight. The session was presided over by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Nationalists present at the summit swore an oath to observe January 26th as “Independence Day” in order to march toward the realization of their goal of complete independence from the British. The Lahore Session formed a human chain leading to the Civil Disobedience Movement. It was decided that the 26th of January, 1930, would be commemorated as Purna Swaraj Day, and the tricolor flag was unfurled by accepting a commitment to celebrate full Independence Day every year on the 26th of January. Numerous Indian political parties and revolutionaries from throughout the country came together to celebrate the day with dignity and pride.
