Given: 

Time taken by 

xx and yy = 16 days

yy and zz = 24 days

x,yx,y and zz = 12 days 

Solution:

The work rate

x+y=116x+y = \dfrac{1}{16} ----- (1)

y+z=124y+z=\dfrac{1}{24}  ----- (2)

x+y+z=112x+y+z=\dfrac{1}{12}  ----- (3)

Substitute equation (1) in (3)

116+z=112\dfrac{1}{16}+z=\dfrac{1}{12}

z=112116z=\dfrac{1}{12}-\dfrac{1}{16}

z=4192=148z=\dfrac{4}{192}=\dfrac{1}{48}

Substitute equation (2) in (3) 

x+124=112x+\dfrac{1}{24}=\dfrac{1}{12}

x=112124x=\dfrac{1}{12}-\dfrac{1}{24}

x=12288=124x=\dfrac{12}{288}=\dfrac{1}{24}

the combined work rate of x and z

x+z=124+148=348=116x+z=\dfrac{1}{24}+\dfrac{1}{48}=\dfrac{3}{48}=\dfrac{1}{16}  

Therefore, time taken by xx andzz is 16 days
