The National Informatics Centre has allowed GATE 2024, 2025 & 2026 applicants to be selected for the post of scientists at the group A gazetted level.
To be eligible for this post, the GATE score must be from one of the approved streams, which are as follows
1. Computer Science (CS)
2. Electronics & Communication (EC) or
3. Data Science/Artificial Intelligence (DA)
This makes strong performance in at least one of these GATE cycles absolutely crucial for aspirants. The GATE score is used as the primary shortlisting criterion. Only candidates who clear the GATE-based cutoff will move ahead to the Personal Interview and document verification stage.
While the initial notification has already been released, detailed information such as score weightage, cut-off trends and interview-related norms will be shared in a detailed PDF expected around 10 days after the declaration of GATE 2026 results.
What to Expect in the NIC Interview 2026?
The table below discusses the important questions that may be asked by interview panellists to assess the knowledge of the candidates. Since the selectionis purely based on GATE scores of year 2024, 2025, and 2026 for 243 scientists at the National Informatics Centre, the final merit will be based on the interview performance.
| Interview Area | Computer Science (CS) & Data Science/AI (DA) | Electronics & Communication (EC) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall Interview Style | The interview focuses on how well applicants understand the basics and how they would use them in real government IT systems not on mugging up the entire syllabus | The panel checks how clearly applicants understand core electronics concepts and whether they can relate them to practical IT and networking setups. |
| Main Subjects Discussed | Most questions come from your strong areas like Data Structures, Algorithms, OS, DBMS, Computer Networks and OOP | Questions are usually from Digital Logic, Computer Organisation, Signals, Communication Systems and basic networking |
| Type of Technical Questions | You may be asked things like how an OS manages processes or memory, how databases keep data safe, or how you would make a program run faster | Expect questions on how circuits work, how data flows inside a system, how signals behave or how communication happens in real life |
| Understanding of Large Systems | The panel may ask how big government websites or databases are built, scaled and kept running smoothly | Applicants may be asked how hardware, networks and communication links support large national IT systems |
| Security & Reliability Topics | Questions often touch on cybersecurity, data privacy, cloud platforms and how systems are protected from failures | Discussions may include secure communication, basic encryption ideas, and keeping networks stable and reliable |
| Programming & Practical Experience | Applicants might need to explain their coding logic in Java or Python or talk about a project, internship or work experience | Applicants may be asked to explain academic projects, lab work or how hardware and software work together in practice |
| Questions About NIC | The panel often asks why you want to join NIC, what you know about its e-governance work and how your skills fit into Digital India | Similar questions are asked, focusing on NIC’s role in building and maintaining secure digital infrastructure |
| What the Panel Really Looks For | Clear thinking, honest answers, strong basics and the ability to explain concepts in simple words | Concept clarity, practical understanding, and the ability to connect theory with real applications |
| Overall Impression | It matters more how clearly candidates explain and think than how many topics they remember | Practical understanding and calm explanation matter more than memorised formulas |
