Q1. If a load of 40 KN is applied in a compressive manner on a rod whose cross section is 10 mm ×20mm, then what will be the compressive stress on the rod in MPa?
(a) 0.2
(b) 2
(c) 20
(d) 200

Q2. The property of a material by virtue of which it can be beaten or rolled into plates is called
(a) Malleability
(b) Elasticity
(c) Plasticity
(d) Ductility

Q3. The pressure within the cylinder of a hydraulic press is 9 MPa. The inside diameter of the cylinder is 500 mm. If the permissible tensile stress is 180 N/mm², the minimum wall thickness of the cylinder is:
(a) 12.5 mm
(b) 16 mm
(c) 9 mm
(d) 18 mm

Q4. The amount of oxygen available in the effluent in any form to the total amount of oxygen required in 1st stage of BOD is
(a) Theoretical oxygen demand
(b) Total organic carbon
(c) Relative stability
(d) Relative BOD

Q5. The meniscus and dispersing agent corrections, in the hydrometer analysis, respectively are
(a) Positive and negative
(b) Negative and positive
(c) Positive and positive
(d) Negative and negative

Q6. If E_c and E_s are modulus of elasticity of concrete and steel respectively, then the modular ratio (m) will be
(a) E_c/E_s
(b) E_s/E_c
(c) (E_c+E_s)/(E_s-E_c )
(d) (4E_c)/E_s

Solutions

S1. Ans.(d)
Sol. Given,
P=40 kN=40×10^3 N
A=10×20 mm^2
σ= ?
σ=P/A
=(40×10^3)/(10×20)
▭(σ=200 MPa)

S2. Ans.(a)
Sol. Malleability is the property of material allows it to expand in all direction without rupture or it is the property of a material by virtue of which it can be beaten or rolled into plates.

S3. Ans.(a)
Sol. Maximum stress inside thin cylinder.
σ_ind= Pd/2t
180 = (9×500)/2t
t = 12.5 mm

S4. Ans.(c)
Sol. ▭(Relative stability (S_r )=(Amount of oxygen available in effluent)/(Total amount of oxygen required in 1st stage BOD))

S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. The observed hydrometer reading is further being corrected by following –
– Meniscus correction (Cm)
– Temperature correction (C_T )
– Dispersing agent correction (C_D )
→ Meniscus correction is always positive & dispersing agent correction is always negative.
→ If temperature greater than 27°c then temperature correction is Positive and when temperature is less than 27°C then temperature correction is negative.

S6. Ans.(b)
Sol. ▭(Modular Ratio (m)=(Modulas of elasticity of steel(E_s ))/(Modulus of plasticity of concrete(E_c ) ))
E_s=2×10^5 N\/mm^2
E_c=5000 √fck (Acc. To IS 456:2000)
