Question

With a uniform speed, a car covers a distance in 16 hours. Had the speed been increased by 20 km/h, the same distance would have been covered in 12 hours. The total distance covered by the car is:

A.

720 km

B.

1080 km

C.

960 km

D.

480 km

Correct option is C

Given:
Total time taken by car to cover full distance with uniform speed = 16 hours
When speed is increased by 20 km/h, then distance is covered in 12 hours.
Formula Used:
Speed (v)=Distance (d)Time (t)\text{Speed} \, (v) = \frac{\text{Distance} \, (d)}{\text{Time} \, (t)} \\
Solution:
Let the total distance be x km and uniform speed be y km/h.
So, as per the first condition,
y=x16\frac {x}{16}
Distance, x = 16y
When the speed is increase by 20 km/h,
y+20= x12\frac{x}{12}
Distance, x = 12(y+20)
Equating both the equations, we get
16y = 12(y + 20)
16y = 12y + 240
16y – 12y = 240
4y = 240
y = 2404=60km/h\frac{240}{4} = 60 km/h
So, the total distance, x = 16y = 16 × 60 = 960 km.
