Question

Two trains having lengths of 410 m and 440 m are running at speeds of 60 km/h and 70 km/h, respectively, in the same direction. The time taken (in minutes) by the faster train, coming from behind, to completely cross the other train is:

A.

3.4

B.

5

C.

5.1

D.

4

Correct option is C

Given:
Length of trains = 410 m and 440 m
Speeds = 60 km/h and 70 km/h
Formula Used:
Relative speed = difference of speeds (since same direction).
1 km/h = (5/18)m/s
Time = (sum of lengths) ÷ relative speed
Solution:
Total distance to cross = 410 + 440 = 850 m.
Relative speed = 70 − 60 = 10 km/h = 10 × 5/18 = 50/18 m/s
Time in seconds = 850 ÷ (50/18) = 850 × 18 / 50 = 17 × 18 = 306 seconds.
Time in minutes = 306 ÷ 60 = 5.1 minutes.
