Question

Two trains start from stations A and B towards each other at speeds of 100 km/hour and 120 km/hour, respectively. At the time of their meeting, the second train has covered a distance of 280 km more than that covered by the first train. The distance between the stations A and B is

A.

2840 km

B.

2880 km

C.

3080 km

D.

3240 km

Correct option is C

Given:

Speed of first train = 100 km/h

Speed of second train = 120 km/h

Difference in distances covered at meeting point = 280 km

Formula Used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Solution:

Let the time taken by both trains to meet be (t) hours.

Distance covered by first train = 100t

Distance covered by second train = 120t

Given that the second train covers 280 km more:

120t - 100t = 280

20t = 280

t = 14 hours

Distance covered by first train

= 100 × 14 = 1400 km

Distance covered by second train

= 120 × 14 = 1680 km

Total distance between stations A and B:

1400 + 1680 = 3080 km
