Question

Two trains having lengths of 450 m and 350 m are running at speeds of 80 km/h and 110 km/h, respectively, in the same direction. The time taken (in minutes) by the faster train, coming from behind, to completely cross the other train is:

A.

2.4

B.

3.4

C.

1.6

D.

3

Correct option is C

Given:

Length of first train = 450 m

Length of second train = 350 m

Speed of first train = 80 km/h

Speed of second train (faster) = 110 km/h

Both trains move in the same direction

Formula Used:

Time = DistanceSpeed\frac{Distance}{Speed}

Solution:

Relative Speed =  110 − 80 = 30 km/h = 30 × 518=253 m/s\frac{5}{18} = \frac{25}3 \, \text{m/s}

Distance = 450 + 350 = 800 m

Time = 80025/3\frac{800}{25/3} = 96 seconds

In minutes,  96601.6 minutes\frac{96}{60} \approx 1.6 \, \text{minutes}
