Two trains 240 m and 320 m long are travelling on parallel tracks in the same direction at speeds of 59 km/h and 50 km/h. How long will it take for the two trains to pass each other from the instant they meet?

Given:

Length of two trains = 240m and 320m

Speed of train = 59km/hr and 50 km/hr respectively

Formula Used:

Time = DistanceSpeed \frac{Distance}{Speed}​​

Solution:

Relative speeds of train when moving in same direction = 59 - 50 = 9km/hr

Speed in metre per second = 9×5189 \times \frac{5}{18} = 2.5m/sec

Total distance = Total length of train = 240 + 320 = 560metres

Time taken to cross = 5602.5\frac{560}{2.5}​ = 224seconds

Time in minutes = 22460=34460\frac{224}{60} = 3\frac{44}{60}​ = 3 minutes 44 seconds
