    Given:

    Two numbers are in the ratio 7:57 : 57:5.

    The first number is increased by 14 and the second number is decreased by 5

    Solution: 

    First number = 7x,

    Second number = 5x

    The first number is increased by 14 and the second number is decreased by 5,

    New first number = 7x+147x + 14 

    New second number = 5x55x - 5 

    The new ratio is given as 4 : 2 

    7x+145x5=42\frac{7x + 14}{5x - 5} = \frac{4}{2} 

    7x+145x5=2\frac{7x + 14}{5x -5} = 2 

    7x+14=2(5x5)7x + 14 = 2 (5x - 5)  

    7x+14=10x107x + 14 = 10x - 10 

    7x10x=10147x - 10x = -10 -14 

    3x=24-3x = -24 

    x=243=8x = \frac{-24}{-3} = 8 

    First number = 7×8=567 \times 8 = 56 

    Second number = 5×8=405 \times 8 = 40 

    The sum of the original two numbers = 56+40=9656 + 40 = 96
