Question

The ratio of two numbers is 3 : 8. If the sum of both the numbers is 220, then what is the smaller number among both the numbers?

A.

20

B.

120

C.

60

D.

220

Correct option is C

Given:

Ratio of two numbers = 3 : 8

Sum of the numbers = 220

Solution:

Let the numbers be 3x and 8x
Then, 3x + 8x = 11x = 220

=>x=22011\Rightarrow x = \frac{220}{11}
Smaller number = 3x

So, 11 units=220 11 \text{ units} = 220

=>3 units=22011×3=20×3=60\Rightarrow 3 \text{ units} = \frac{220}{11} \times 3 = 20 \times 3 = 60

Thus, the correct option is (c) ₹60

Alternate Method:

Total parts = 3 + 8 = 11
One part = 22011=20\frac{220}{11} = 20
Smaller number = 3×20=603 \times 20 = 60
