Three resistors of 12 ohm, 16 ohm and 48 ohm are connected in parallel. What is the net resistance?
Question

Three resistors of 12 ohm, 16 ohm and 48 ohm are connected in parallel. What is the net resistance?

A.

16\frac{1}{6} ohm

B.

6 ohm

C.

76 ohm

D.

176\frac{1}{76} ohm

Correct option is B

The correct answer is (B) 6 ohm.

Solution:

When resistors are connected in parallel, the net (or equivalent) resistance Req is given by the formula:

1Req=1R1+1R2+1R3\frac{1}{R_{eq}} = \frac{1}{R_{1}} + \frac{1}{R_{2}} + \frac{1}{R_{3}}

where:

  • R1= ohm
  • R2=16 ohm
  • R3=48 ohm

Substituting the values:

1Req=112+116+148\frac{1}{R_{eq}} = \frac{1}{12} + \frac{1}{16} + \frac{1}{48}

Req=   848=16\frac{8}{48} = \frac{1}{6}

R= 6 Ohm

The net resistance is 6 ohm, so the correct option is (B) 6 ohm.

Ohm's Law Definition:

  • Ohm’s Law states that the current (III) flowing through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage (VVV) across the two points, provided the temperature and other physical conditions remain constant. Mathematically, it is expressed as:
  • where VVV is the voltage (in volts), III is the current (in amperes), and RRR is the resistance (in ohms).
          V=IRV = IR                                                                                                                                      V=IR
