    Question

The population of a district is 385000, out of which 168000 are males. 52% of the population is literate. If 21% males are literate, then what percentage of females are literate?

    A.

    78%

    B.

    73%

    C.

    76%

    D.

    74%

    Correct option is C

    Given:

    Total population = 385000

    Number of males = 168000

    Percentage of literates = 52% of 385000

Percentage of literate males = 21% of 168000

    Formula Used:

    Female Literacy % = (Literate Females217000)×100\left( \frac{\text{Literate Females}}{217000} \right) \times 100

    Solution:

    Total literates = 52100×385000\frac{52}{100} \times 385000 = 200200

    Literate males = 21100×168000\frac{21}{100} \times 168000 = 35280

    Literate females = 200200 - 35280 = 164920

    Female population = 385000 - 168000 = 217000

    Female literacy % = 164920217000×10076%\frac{164920}{217000} \times 100 \approx 76\%
