Question

In covering a distance of 52 km, Pranay takes 7 hours more than Aman. If Pranay doubles his speed, then he would take 6 hours less than Aman. Pranay's speed is:

A.

10 km/hr

B.

3 km/hr

C.

2 km/hr

D.

8 km/hr

Correct option is C

Given:

Distance = 52 km

Pranay takes 7 hours more than Aman.

If Pranay doubles his speed, his time becomes 6 hours less than Aman.

Formula Used:

Speed = Distance  Time\frac{\text{ Distance }}{\text{ Time}}

Solution:
Let Aman's time for 52 km be t hours

Aman's speed =52t= \dfrac{52}{t}
Then Pranay’s time = t +7 hours

Pranay’s speed =52t+7 \dfrac{52}{t+7}

If Pranay doubles his speed, his time halves:
t+72=t6\frac{t+7}{2} = t - 6
t + 7 = 2t - 12

t = 19

So Pranay’s time = t +7 = 26 hours.

Pranay’s speed
=5226=2 km/h= \frac{52}{26} = 2\ \text{km/h}r
