Question

A person can complete a journey in 22 hours. He covers the first one-third part of the journey at the rate of 15 km/h and the remaining distance at the rate of 45 km/h. What is the total distance of his journey (in km)?

A.

584

B.

590

C.

594

D.

585

Correct option is C

Given:

Total time = 22 hours

Speed for first one-third distance = 15 km/h

Speed for remaining two-thirds distance = 45 km/h

Formula Used:

Total time = Time for first part + Time for second part

Time = distancespeed\frac{\text{distance}}{\text{speed}}

Solution:

If total distance =D, then
First part distance = D3\frac{D}{3}
Second part distance = 2D3\frac{2D}{3}

Now,

22=D315+2D34522 = \frac{\frac{D}{3}}{15} + \frac{\frac{2D}{3}}{45}

22=D3×15+2D3×4522 = \frac{D}{3 \times 15} + \frac{2D}{3 \times 45}

22=D45+2D13522 = \frac{D}{45} + \frac{2D}{135}

22=3D135+2D13522 = \frac{3D}{135} + \frac{2D}{135}

22=5D13522 = \frac{5D}{135}

D = 22×1355 \frac{22 \times 135}{5} = 594 km
