Question

A person can complete a journey in 11 hours. He covers the first one-third part of the journey at the rate of 36 km/h and the remaining distance at the rate of 60 km/h. What is the total distance of his journey (in km)?

A.

539 km

B.

540 km

C.

535 km

D.

534 km

Correct option is B

Given:

Total time taken = 11 hours
First one-third of the journey is covered at 36 km/h
Remaining two-thirds of the journey is covered at 60 km/h

Formula Used:

Distance = Speed × Time
Let the total distance of the journey be denoted by D.

Solution:

According to the question,

Let the total distance =3x

x36+2x60=11 5x+6x180=11 11x180=11 x=180\frac{x}{36} + \frac{2x}{60} = 11 \\\ \\\frac{ 5x + 6x}{180} = 11 \\\ \\ \frac{11x}{180} = 11\\\ \\x = 180

Then total distance 3x=180×3=540 km3x = 180 \times 3 = 540 \ km
