Question

A mutation in a plant gene is female gametophyte lethal. This mutant allele can be normally transmitted through pollen. However, when transmitted through egg, the embryos abort, resulting in inviable seeds irrespective of the male allele. A student harvested the seeds from a heterozygous mutant plant and grew a total of 100 plants. What is the expected number of homozygous plants in this population?

A.

25

B.

50

C.

66

D.

75

Correct option is B

The correct option is (b)

EXPLANATION-

A plant is heterozygous (Aa) for a mutation that is lethal when passed through the female gamete (egg). This means:
Eggs carrying the mutant allele a die and produce no seeds.
Eggs carrying the normal allele A survive.
Pollen (male gametes) carrying either A or a can fertilize normally.
So, only eggs with A combine with pollen carrying A or a. This produces two types of plants:
                                 AA (homozygous normal)
                                 Aa (heterozygous)

These two genotypes appear in equal proportions (50% each).
If 100 plants grow, about half (50) will be homozygous (AA).
