Work to be completed in 10 days

Five men absent

Remaining men complete in 12 days

Formula used:

Work = Number of men × Number of days

Solution:

Let the original number of men be x.

Original plan: => Work = x × 10

With five men absent, there are now (x - 5) men:

=> Work = (x - 5) × 12

Since the total work done remains the same: => x × 10 = (x - 5) × 12

=> 10x = 12x - 60

=> 60 = 12x - 10x

=> 60 = 2x

=> x = 60 ÷ 2

=> x = 30

The original number of men is 30.
