Question

A 270 m long train running at a speed of 120 km/h crosses another train running in opposite direction at the speed of 80 km/h in 9 seconds. What is the length of the other train?

A.

280 m

B.

240 m

C.

260 m

D.

230 m

Correct option is D

Given:
Speed of Train 1 = 120 km/h
Speed of Train 2 = 80 km/h
Time = 9 seconds
Formula Used:
Relative speed when trains are moving in opposite directions = Speed of Train 1 + Speed of Train 2.
Solution:
Relative speed = 120 + 80 = 200 km/h = 200 * (1000/3600) = 500/9 m/s.
Total distance covered in 9 seconds = 500/9 * 9 = 500 m.
Thus, length of the second train = Total distance - Length of the first train = 500 - 270 = 230 m.
