Each question carries 1 mark
Negative marking: 1/4 mark
Time: 8 Minutes

Q1. A solid metal bar of uniform diameter D and length L is hung vertically from a ceiling. If the density of the material of the bar is P and the modulus of elasticity is E, then the total elongation of the bar due to its own weight is
(a) PL/2E
(b) PL²/2E
(c) PE/2L
(d) PE/2L²

Q2. In an experiment it found that the bulk modulus of a material is equal to its shear modulus. This Poisson’s ratio is.
(a) 0.125
(b) 0.250
(c) 0.375
(d) 0.500

Q3. The ratio of the undisturbed shear strength to the remoulded shear strength in cohesive soil under undrained conditions is
(a) zero
(b) 1
(c) greater than 1
(d) between 0 and 1

Q4. Using Mohr’s diagram, the relation between major principal stress σ_1, and minor principal stress σ_3, and shear parameters c and ϕ is given by σ_1=σ_3 N_ϕ + 2C√(N_ϕ ) where N_ϕ is equal to
(a) sinϕ/(1+Sinϕ)
(b) sinϕ/(1-sinϕ)
(c) (1-sinϕ)/(1+sinϕ)
(d) (1+sinϕ)/(1-sinϕ)

Q5.A soil has a liquid of 40% and plasticity index of 20%. The plastic limit of the soil will be
(a) 20%
(b) 30%
(c) 40%
(d) 60%

Q6.In plate load test to determine the bearing capacity if the soil is sand, then bearing capacity of the footing is
(a) Directly proportional to the width of footing
(b) Inversely proportional to width of footing
(c) Independent of the width of footing
(d) Directly proportional to square root of width of footing

SOLUTION

S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. Total elongation in a bar due to its self-weight is given by-
(∆L=(PL^2)/2E)
∆L= Total elongation
L= Length of bar
P= density of the material of bar

S2. Ans.(a)
Sol. Given bulk modulus (K) = Shear modulus (G)
Now,
Poisson’s ratio (μ)=(3K-2G)/(6K+2G)=(3-2)/(6+2)=1/8=0.125

S3. Ans.(c)
Sol. Sensitivity of a soil can be defined as ratio of compressive strength of unconfined soil to that of soil in a remoulded state. It is greater than 1 in case of cohesive soils under undrained condition.

S4. Ans.(d)
Sol. Using Mohr’s diagram the relation between major principal stress σ_1 and the minor principal stress σ_3 and shear parameter C and ϕ in cohesive soil is given by
▭(σ_1=σ_3 N_ϕ+2C√Nϕ)
Where N_ϕ is passive earth pressure co-efficient and it is given by
▭(N_ϕ=(1+sinϕ)/(1-sinϕ))

S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Given
w_L=40%
I_P = 20%
w_P= ?
I_P=w_L-w_P
20%=40%-W_P
▭(W_P=20%)

S6. Ans.(a)
Sol. Bearing capacity of footing as per shear criteria is given by-
▭(q_uf/q_up =B_f/B_p )
▭(q_up α B_f )
Where,
q_uf = ultimate bearing capacity of footing
q_up=ultimate bearing capacity of plate
B_f= width of footing
B_p=Width of plate.
