Quiz: Civil Engineering
Exam: NHPC-JE
Topic: Miscellaneous

Each question carries 1 mark
Negative marking: 1/4 mark
Time: 8 Minutes

Q1. The minimum edge and end distance from the centre of any hole to the nearest flame-cut edge shall not be less than
(a) 1.5 times hole diameter
(b) 1.7 times hole diameter
(c) 2 times hole diameter
(d) 1.5 times bolt/rivet diameter

Q2. Calculate the number of bricks in 20 cubic meters brick works.
(a) 500
(b) 1000
(c) 10000
(d) 100000

Q3. At a sewage treatment plant for a flow of 3 m³/sec, the cross-sectional area of grit chamber will be about
(a) 20 m²
(b) 25 m²
(c) 30 m²
(d) 10 m²

Q4. The difference between face left and face right observation of a theodolite is 3’. The error is
(a) 3’
(b) 1°30”
(c) 45”
(d) 0’

Q5. The light weight aggregates are obtained from
(a) Volcanic source
(b) Igneous source
(c) Metamorphic source
(d) Sedimentary source

Q6. For a soil deposit having porosity (n) = 33% and specific gravity (G) = 2.60, the critical gradient is:
(a) 1.0
(b) 1.05
(c) 1.07
(d) 1.10

Solutions

S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. According to IS800: 2007 recommendation.
→ minimum value of edge distance = 1.7 × diameter of hole
[In case of sheared or hand flamed out edges]

→ minimum edge and end distance shaft not be less than = 1.5 × diameter of hole
[In case of rolled machine flames (cut, sawn and planed edges]

S2. Ans.(c)
Sol. No. of bricks in 1m² = 500
Hence, no. of bricks in 20 m³ bricks work = 20 × 500
=10000 bricks

S3. Ans.(d)
Sol. The horizontal velocity in grit chambers is about 0.3 m/sec.
Cross-sectional area required = Discharge/(Velocity (horizontal))
=3/0.3
= 10 m^2.

S4. Ans.(b)
Sol.
▭(Error=(Difference between face left and face right observation)/2)
Error = (3’)/2
▭(Error=1°30″)

S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Most of the light weight aggregates are obtained from volcanic source.
Ex. Basalt, blast furnace slag, natural pumice etc.

S6. Ans.(c)
Sol. Given, Porosity (n) = 33%
Specific gravity (G) = 2.60
Critical hydraulic gradient (I_C ) = ?
▭(I_C=(G-1)/(1+e))
e=n/(1-n)=0.33/(1-0.33)=0.49
I_C=(2.6-1)/(1+0.49)
▭(I_C=1.073 )
