Quiz: Civil Engineering
Exam: NHPC-JE
Topic: Miscellaneous

Each question carries 1 mark
Negative marking: 1/4 mark
Time: 8 Minutes

Q1. 20 vehicle passes through 5 minutes on the road, then the calculate the number of vehicles of per hourly of that place:
(a) 240 vph
(b) 7200 vph
(c) 120 vph
(d) 14,400 vph

Q2. Which of the following represents the value of hourly variation factor?
(a) 1.2
(b) 1.5
(c) 1.7
(d) 2.5

Q3. Atterberg limit tests were carried on a certain soil with the following results:
(i) Liquid Limit =40%
(ii) Plastic Limit =25%
(iii) Shrinkage Limit=10%
The value of plasticity index is:
(a) 30%
(b) 15%
(c) 25%
(d) 40%

Q4. The rocks that possess crystalline and compact grains are called:
(a) Siliceous rocks
(b) Stratified rocks
(c) Unstratified rocks
(d) Foliated rocks

Q5. The scale in which three successive dimensions can be measure at a time is called ___________.
(a) Chord scale
(b) Diagonal scale
(c) Plain scale
(d) Vernier scales

Q6. A mean annual runoff 2m³/s from a catchment of area 10 km² represents an effective rainfall of nearly:
(a) 530 cm
(b) 590 cm
(c) 630 cm
(d) 658 cm

Solutions

S1. Ans.(a)
Sol. No. of vehicle passes in 5 min = 20
No. of vehicle passes in 1 min = 20/5 = 4 veh/m.
Hence,
No. of vehicle passes in 60 min = 60 × 4
= 240 vph

S2. Ans.(b)
Sol.
Maximum Hourly demand = 1.5 × Average hourly demand
Maximum daily demand = 1.8 × Average daily demand

S3. Ans.(b)
Sol.
w_L=40%
w_P=25%
w_S=10%
Plasticity index (I_P )=w_L-w_p
= 40 – 25
= 15%

S4. Ans.(c)
Sol. Unstratified rocks → These rocks possess crystalline and compact grains. They do not have plane of stratification. Igneous rocks are unstratified rock.
Ex. Granite, marble, trap, Basalt etc.

S5. Ans.(b)
Sol. Diagonal scale → In this scale three successive dimension can be measured at a time like meter, decimeter and centimeter. In this case only units, tenths and hundredths can be shown.
Plane scale → In this scale two successive dimension can be measure at a time. Like meter and decimeter.

S6. Ans.(c)
Sol. Given,
Annual runoff = 2 m³/s
Area of = 10 km² = 10 × 10^6 m²
Effective rainfall = (Annual Runoff)/(Area of catchment)
=(2×60×60×24×365〖 m〗^3 )/(10×10^6 m^2 )
=6.3072 m.
=630.7 cm.
