Which of the following nitrogen containing compounds is formed during deamination of organic nitrogen in plants?
Question

Which of the following nitrogen containing compounds is formed during deamination of organic nitrogen in plants?

A.

NO

B.

NO₂⁻

C.

NH₃⁻

D.

NO4+

Correct option is D

Explanation-

Option a - NO (Nitric oxide) – Nitric oxide is a gaseous signaling molecule in plants. It plays roles in seed germination, stomatal closure, stress responses, and plant defense. It is not  a direct product of deamination.
Option b - NO₂⁻ (Nitrite) – Intermediate in the nitrification process (conversion of NH₄⁺ to NO₃⁻ by soil bacteria) , also formed during nitrate assimilation (NO₃⁻ → NO₂⁻ → NH₄⁺ in plants). But it is not  formed directly during deamination.
Option c - NO₃⁻ (Nitrate) –  Major nitrogen source absorbed by plant roots from the soil. Nitrate ions is produced in soil by nitrifying bacteria converting nitrite (NO₂⁻) to nitrate (NO₃⁻), but not  a deamination product.
Option d - NH₄⁺ (Ammonium) –  This is the correct answer. During deamination, amino groups (−NH₂) are removed from amino acids, producing ammonia (NH₃), which is quickly converted into ammonium (NH₄⁺) in plant cells.

So, the correct answer is option d - NH₄⁺ (Ammonium).
