Question

Two trains, 136 metres and 144 metres in length are running in opposite directions. The first runs at the rate of 65 km/hr and the second at the rate of 79 km/hr. How long will they take to cross each other?

A.

12 seconds

B.

7 seconds

C.

6 seconds

D.

16 seconds

Correct option is B

Given
Length of train 1 = 136 m
Length of train 2 = 144 m
Speed of train 1 = 65 km/hr
Speed of train 2 = 79 km/hr
Formula Used
Total Distance = Length 1 + Length 2
Relative Speed (opposite directions) = Speed 1 + Speed 2
Time = Total DistanceRelative Speed\frac{\text{Total Distance}}{\text{Relative Speed}}
Solution
Total distance = 136 + 144 = 280 m
Relative speed = 65 + 79 = 144 km/hr
Convert into m/s = 144×518144 × \frac{5}{18} = 40 m/s
Time taken = 28040=7\frac{280}{40} = 7 seconds
Final Answer
So the correct answer is (b)
