Question

Two poles are standing on the ground. The distances between their feet and their tops are 48 m and 50 m respectively. If the height of the small pole is 10 m, find the height of the big pole.

A.

12m

B.

14m

C.

16m

D.

24m

Correct option is D

Given:

Distance between the foot and the top of the first pole = 48 m

Distance between the foot and the top of the second pole = 50 m

Height of the smaller pole = 10 m

Formula Used:

For a right-angled triangle,

the square of the hypotenuse (h) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides

Height² + Base² = Distance²

Solution:

For the small pole: Let the EC = x

=>x2=502482=>x2=25002304=>x2=196=>x=14\begin{aligned}& \Rightarrow x^2=50^2-48^2 \\& \Rightarrow x^2=2500-2304 \\& \Rightarrow x^2=196 \\& \Rightarrow x=14\end{aligned}

Height of big poles = BC+ CE = DA+ CE = 14 + 10 = 24 m

Therefore, the height of the big pole is 24 meters.
