Question

A tree broke at a height of 8 m from its foot and the broken upper part touches the ground at a point of 6 m from its foot. Find the height of the tree.

A.

15 m

B.

16 m

C.

18 m

D.

24 m

Correct option is C

Given:

Break point from the base = 8 m

Distance from foot to where the top touches ground = 6 m

Concept Used:

The broken upper part forms the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle, with:

vertical part = 8 m

horizontal distance = 6 m

Formula Used:

Pythagoras theorem:

Hypotenuse2=Base2+Height2\text{Hypotenuse}^2 = \text{Base}^2 + \text{Height}^2

Solution:

Broken part length(Hypotenuse) = 62+82\sqrt{6^2 + 8^2}

=36+64= \sqrt{36 + 64}

=100= \sqrt{100}

= 10 m

Total height of tree = 8 + 10 = 18 m
