Question

Three persons have their ages in the ratio 4 : 7 : 9. Eight years back their total age was 56. How old is the eldest now?

A.

42

B.

36

C.

28

D.

32

Correct option is B

Given:

Ratio of ages = 4 : 7 : 9

Eight years ago, total age = 56

Solution:

Total age eight years ago:

(4x - 8) + (7x - 8) + (9x - 8) = 56

4x + 7x + 9x - 24 = 56

20x - 24 = 56

20x = 56 + 24

20x = 80

x = 80 / 20

x = 4

Ages of them -

4x=4×4=16 7x=7×4=28 9x=9×4=364x = 4 \times 4 = 16\\\ 7x = 7 \times 4 = 28\\\ 9x = 9 \times 4 = 36

The eldest is 36 years old now.
