Question

There are two numbers with the difference of 14 between them and the difference of their squares is 56. What are those numbers?

A.

9, -5

B.

2, 16

C.

3, 17

D.

23, -9

Correct option is A

Given:

Difference between two numbers = 14
Difference of their squares = 56

Formula Used:

a2b2=(ab)(a+b)a^2 - b^2 = (a - b)(a + b)

Solution:
a2b2=56a^2 - b^2 = 56

(a - b)(a + b) = 56

14(a + b) = 56

a + b = 5614=4\frac{56}{14} = 4

a - b = 14

a + b = 4

Add equations:

2a = 18

a = 9

b = a - 14 = 9 - 14 = -5

The two numbers are 9 and -5.
