Question

The total number of students in class A and class B is 120 . If 15 students from class A are taken and added to class B , the number in class B becomes twice that of A. Find out the number of students in class A in the beginning.

A.

80

B.

65

C.

55

D.

40

Correct option is C

Given:

- Total students in A and B = 120

- Let number of students in class A initially = x

- Number of students in class B initially = 120 - x

- 15 students move from A to B

Solution:

Condition after moving 15 students:

Students in A = x - 15

Students in B = (120 - x) + 15 = 135 - x

Number in B is twice that of A:

135 - x = 2 (x - 15)

Solve the equation:

135 - x = 2x - 30

135 + 30 = 2x + x

165 = 3x

x = 55

The number of students in class A initially was 55.
