Question

The mode and median of a data set is 89.7 and 32, respectively. What is the mean of the data set? (Use empirical formula.)

A.

2.6

B.

11.26

C.

5.9

D.

3.15

Correct option is D

Given:

Mode = 89.7

Median = 32

Formula Used:

Mode =  3 × Median - 2 × Mean

can be written as;

Mean = 3×MedianMode2\frac{3 \times \text{Median} - \text{Mode}}{2}

Solution:

Mean = 3×3289.72 \frac{3 \times 32 - 89.7}{2}

=9689.72= \frac{96 - 89.7}{2}

=6.32= \frac{6.3}{2} = 3.15

Thus, the mean of the data set is 3.15
