Question

The mean of 11 numbers is 44. If the mean of the first 6 numbers is 39 and that of the last 6 numbers is 48, then what is the 6th number?

A.

38

B.

36

C.

32

D.

34

Correct option is A

Given:

The mean of 11 numbers = 44

The mean of the first 6 numbers = 39

The mean of the last 6 numbers = 48

Solution:

Sum of 11 numbers = 11×44=48411 \times 44 = 484

Sum of first 6 numbers = 39×639\times 6  = 234

Sum of the last 6 numbers = 6×486\times 48   = 288

Then the sixth number =  234 +  288- 484

= 38
