Question

The initial ratio of sugar and flour in recipe was 17 : 28. With 27 kg of the recipe, Sunita added more flour to make the sugar to flour ratio 2:5. How much flour did Sunita later add?

A.

8.1 kg

B.

8.3 kg

C.

8.5 kg

D.

8.7 kg

Correct option is D

Given:

The initial ratio of sugar and flour in the recipe was 17:28. With 27 kg of the recipe, Sunita added more flour to make the sugar to flour ratio 2:5.

Solution:

Weight of the mixture = 27 kg

∴ Weight of sugar = 27 × (1745\frac{17}{45}) = 10.2 kg

∴ Weight of flour = 27 × (2845\frac{28}{45}) = 16.8 kg

Let, Sunita added x kg more flour

According to the problem,

=> 10.2(16.8+x)=25\frac{10.2}{(16.8 + x)} = \frac{2}{5}

=> 51 = 33.6 + 2x

=> 17.4 = 2x

=> x = 8.7 kg
