Question

The given graph represents the data on the ages of various children.
Study the given graph and answer the question that follows.

What is the difference between the mean and mode of the ages?

A.

2

B.

0.5

C.

1

D.

0

Correct option is D

Given:
Age (in years)Number of children120250370450520\begin{array}{|c|c|}\hline\text{Age (in years)} & \text{Number of children} \\\hline1 & 20 \\2 & 50 \\3 & 70 \\4 & 50 \\5 & 20 \\\hline\end{array}
Formula Used:
Mean=(Age×Number of children)Number of children\text{Mean} = \frac{\sum (\text{Age} \times \text{Number of children})}{\sum \text{Number of children}}
Mode = Highest frequency of the class.
Solution:
The total sum for age times number of children:
(1 × 20) + (2 × 50) + (3 × 70) + (4 × 50) + (5 × 20) = 20 + 100 + 210 + 200 + 100 = 630
Total number of children:
20 + 50 + 70 + 50 + 20 = 210
Now,
Mean = 630210\frac{630}{210} = 3
Now,
The mode is the age with the highest frequency of children, which is age 3 (with 70 children).
So, the difference between Mode and mean;
= 3 - 3 =
